In March 2024, the Uganda Biodiversity Fund (UBF) successfully organized a training program to enhance the quality of produce during post-harvest handling and value-addition operations. The training was conducted in two regions, Mid Albertine Rift Region (MARR) and West Nile Region (WNR), and had a total of 102 participants, including representatives of honey, cassava, and shea nut groups, Community Development Officers, and District Commercial Officers.
The UBF training program was designed to equip participants with knowledge and skills on practical and affordable practices to reduce losses during and after harvest. It also aimed to enhance farmers’ access to appropriate market information and marketing innovations to enable them to compete favorably in the market.
The training involved theoretical explanations and practical sessions held at various locations such as the Arua Market Women Honey Traders Association and Bunyangabo Beekeepers Cooperative Society. Practical sessions included making Vaseline from shea nut, honey, and perfume, and making chapati and mandazi from cassava flour.
As part of the training, value chain platforms were formed to enable continuous engagement with other actors in the value chain for better products, prices, and markets. This approach will help address value chain challenges and provide a platform for participants to interact with other experts in their field.
Overall, the UBF training program was a great success and is expected to bring positive change to the lives of the participants and the communities they represent. The training program will enable participants to compete effectively in the market and enhance their access to appropriate market information and innovative marketing strategies.
