The Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) has joined efforts with UBF to form a strong partnership towards securing a better future for Uganda’s environment. The two entities recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to cooperate in mobilizing and utilizing financial resources to support biodiversity conservation and promote sustainable natural resource management in Uganda.
Speaking at the MoU signing event held on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at the Ministry’s head offices in Luzira, Mr. Alfred Okot Okidi, the Permanent Secretary MWE, noted that Uganda has a rich biodiversity that must be preserved not only for Uganda but for the world. He added “Uganda is very rich when it comes to biodiversity. We have the blessing of rare species, and we should, therefore, use this opportunity to preserve them not only for Uganda but for the entire world.”
David Duli, the Chairperson of UBF’s Board of Trustees, emphasized the importance of sustaining Uganda’s economic and social well-being through conservation efforts. He said, “If we are going to sustain the economic and social economic well-being of our different nations across the world, especially Uganda. It is a very small country and yet heavily endowed with diversity.”
This partnership will enable the Ministry to recognize UBF’s potential to assist the Government of Uganda/MWE in managing grants and other financing models for biodiversity conservation. The Ministry will also participate in UBF events aimed at advancing common interests and objectives related to biodiversity conservation and sustainable natural resource management.
This partnership is a significant step in ensuring the preservation of Uganda’s rich biodiversity, and UBF is excited to work with the Ministry towards achieving this goal. According to Mr. Ivan Amanigaruhanga, the Executive Director of UBF, “We are thrilled about this partnership, and we believe that by working together, we can achieve our shared objectives of conserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable natural resource management in Uganda.”
